Toy Fair - Uberstix
Uberstix was right by the main entrance, next to Gund - we'd been looking at their booth for the whole show but finally had a chance to stop by on the last day. What we found was a simple but powerful product, which was clearly well thought out and could be used to make fantastic creations from basic starting points. Now, we see this same philosophy in just about every building system, but there were several key differences in the approach and goals of this company. Started and run by a personable, energetic and unexpectedly cool guy, he brings to the field a real social conscience that he's willing to back up with his product. An entire line of his is based on the idea of creating toys from found objects, like a boat made to float with discarded water bottles. He's also designed a cutting tool that is encased in a protective shell, allowing parts to be modified without danger to young kids. Better still, he wants to get these products distributed all over the world to teach kids about construction and invention - how to send plastic parts to the corners of the earth? Well it's more simple than that, since his cutter allows a simple box of popsicle sticks to become a fortress! This is a very interesting company, and one we are glad we met.
