Transformers AllSpark Deluxe Walmart Exclusives

A big thank you is owed to friend of the Preserve, Stephanie, for securing a full set of the recent WalMart exclusive AllSpark Deluxe figures. These four excellent new additions to the line (Jolt, Grindcore, Big Daddy, Divebomb) proved extremely difficult to find in this out-of-the-way part of the world.

Look for detailed information about each of these figures to show up in the next few days, as we try to keep our Transformers Movie and AllSpark coverage up to date!

Star Wars 30th: Battle Damaged Vader

After having finally found the second wave of the 2008 Star Wars 30th Anniversary figures, it is only just and fitting that we start getting the detailed pages posted for what are some of the coolest figures in an overall great series. Today we start off with Battle-Damaged Vader, and they really made the Lord of the Sith have a pretty bad day with this new sculpt - click the link for a details.

In other toy-related news, the Hasbro figures for the new Iron Man movie are hitting stores, with a dedicated end-cap in Target full of the basic figures as well as a few Target only exclusives! There was also not one, but two full end-caps of Speed Racer product right next to Iron Man, again with a surprising number of Target Exclusives, so if you are a fan of either series, or of Target Exclusives in general, get down to your local store while they last.

Topps Indiana Jones cards

With tremendous excitement, a package was received yesterday that contained a single solitary box of the new Topps Indiana Jones Heritage cards, in all of their vintage-homage glory!

For the last month or more, we've been building this series up for ourselves and others. Having recently seen the sketch and autograph cards that have been deluging eBay, thanks to the rabid case-breaking habits of the card dealers of the world, the excitement has grown further!

Now, it's unclear that there is any sort of economic wisdom behind the actual purchase of a full box, such as this one, for about $50, when a full set of the basic 90 cards can be found for between $5-$10, and the mid-range autograph and sketch cards don't seem to go for very much more! It seems, then, that the case premium, as with any set that commands a few very nice chase cards, is maintained solely on the possibility, however minute, that a super rare Lucas or Ford autograph card may be pulled, or one of the true works of art, either of which easily command at least $500 on the secondary market. Either way, breaking into this box will be exciting (which is the true value) and a full rundown of the contents will follow shortly!

Press Release: Shocker Toys has announced their New York Comic Con exclusive figure, which you may pre-order from their site for pickup at the event, or even for shipping if you're not going to make it to NY! It's a limited figure, of course, so if you like it then get those orders placed. Click the link for a larger picture, and news on the second wave of their Indie Spotlight product line.  Read More

Sega Master System - Galaxy Force (Import)

The next Sega Master System import title to join the Preserve's catalog is Galaxy Force! This title is a hard to find part of the American library, and also served some time over seas. Click the picture for more pictures and the back of box text.

The future of Junos Galaxy hangs by a thread! You must find this title and do what needs to be done!

Rescue Doc check is cashed

Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, I have just discovered a $4.95 deduction from the ol' checking account, which tells me that Hasbro has indeed cashed my 'Operation Rescue Doc' check. Let us hope that means they are getting their ducks in a row, and that Doc will arrive in the mail at the very start of May, or before!

Star Wars 30th, Wave 2008-2

Well, it took a little while, but the Preserve has finally secured what promises to be the final wave of the Star Wars 30th Anniversary run of figures.

Increasingly inappropriately named, in much the same way as the GI Joe 25th line that has now spanned more than one year, the Star Wars 30th anniversary at least only saw two extra waves of figures spill over into 2008. I think that they really went all out on this last wave for the set, and that there are some of the best characters and best sculpts present in this set of 7 figures. So far they are proving to be fairly tricky to find, but if Hasbro really is planning a hiatus in Star Wars product, even for a few weeks, then one has to imagine that this wave will see greater exposure on the shelves before all is said and done. I'm hoping to now be able to follow the sage advice of The Uncle and cease the Star Wars collecting before they launch into the Clone Wars this summer and fall, since this is such a logical break in the product life cycle. I mean, Hasbro will still have me plenty hooked with the Indiana Jones and Transformers releases, so they have little to fear!

Target Watch - Speed Racer and reset

It's been a while since we had a formal Target Watch, so today is high time to amend that! The local Target is dwindling on their stock in the toy isles, with everything from Star Wars to TMNT to Matchbox cars showing bare wall. Supposedly there is an early/mid April reset of the section coming, which might actually introduce placeholders for some of the excellent new lines that we're all looking forward to. That still seems a little on the early side, though, so it may be a staged roll-out. What we do know, however, is that two end-caps of Speed Racer product are planned to go up within the week, so anyone who is looking for those to hit the shelves should get themselves prepared!

Also, the three AllSpark Target Exclusive scout class figures finally made it to my town, though in vanishingly small numbers and they are seeming to fly off the shelves. The tail end of a line is always interesting, and it's becoming clear that those scouts are popular, while the two Leader class figures of Nightwatch Prime and Desert Brawl aren't really selling. I can't say I'm surprised - I've been keeping up with the full collection but put the brakes on at the thought of another $80 for those two repainted figures. Hopefully they will continue to not sell well, and some clearance action is in the near future. A concerning sight is the first wave of the DC Universe classics figures which are clogging their own pegs. The first shipment sold well (mostly to me, I guess) but the restock has been left high and dry. Not only is this a pain because they will not order wave 2 until there is room, but given Mattel's lofty plans of 25 figures a year for 5 years, with variants, for this product line, it'll have to sell a lot better to realize those goals. The saving grace is that the wave 1 figures seemed to sell much better in the 'big city' so hopefully the slow sales are not a national trend.

NECA: Ramones

Press Release - NECA has released an official picture of their Joey Ramone figure, which we hope is the first figure of what will eventually be the entire band! We saw a prototype of this figure at Toy Fair, and it's great to see the official version. It's looking great, and we can't wait to get a hold of one! New products hit the shelves

The last several weeks have been somewhat of a lull in terms of mass-market new toy releases and product arrivals, at least for those of us who were able to get up to current through constant vigilance, but it seems that the money-saving respite is at an end with a growing list of cool items starting to pour in. There's so much interesting stuff, and this is in no way an exhaustive list, that I figured it was time to formalize things a little!
Granted, most of that stuff is still in the future, so in some ways the wait continues! It's nice to see the releases gearing up, though, and also nice to have a few more weeks to get ready. There are plenty more excellent products on the way, and we'll certainly be talking about them as soon as we can!

Transformers Target Exclusives - Storm Surge

Several weeks after posting the first two AllSpark battle Target Exclusive scouts, we're finishing up the set with Storm Surge. In a line that has tremendously underrepresented the Decepticon forces at least we now have a second.

This figure would have been a little more awesome had it been repainted slightly differently and given the obvious G1 name of 'Seaspray' that most all fans have been begging for. Well, I suppose that like 'Tankor' in the upcoming Classics 2.0 series, we are free to remember it as the G1 figure that it really should be.

Washington Trip

This weekend brings with it a fun and relaxing trip to our nation's capital, Washington DC. It's been many years since I visited this part of the world, and certainly never as a functioning adult so it's fun to see the sights with the perspective that only the traversal of life brings. What with being consumed with the visiting of monuments, the exploration of tasty restaurants, and the searching of local Target and WalMarts for the latest in mass market releases, the normal Preserve update schedule has been a little unsettled. At the very least, you get a pretty picture of the Capital out of the deal:

GI Joe 25th - Armored Cobra Commander

Charging forward on the front lines, Cobra Commander keeps his scaly hide intact with this amazing suit of Battle Armor, courtesy of Destro and his high tech armament facility

It's a pricey piece of equipment, so don't expect every last trooper to have one anytime soon, but it'll make sure the Commander is causing trouble for plenty of time to come.

And with that, the GI Joe 25th Anniversary section is again up to date. We eagerly await wave 7 of the basic figures and wave 4 of the comic packs, not to mention the imminent Target exclusive vehicles!

Monster Mania X sunday wrapup

While Sunday is typically a day when many conventions start winding down from the first ray of sunlight, Sunday at Monster Mania X proved to be full of highlights for our show experience. Whereas the non-stop programming of constantly cool Q&A panels on Saturday had left little to no time to meet any of our favorite folks in the autograph rooms, Sunday was wide open and nearly all of the guests had stuck around. Autographs being as pricy as they are these days, we decided to keep things to our very top list of guys, which were Keith David, Roddy Piper and Gunnar Hansen. Meeting Piper was an even better experience than we could have hoped for - he is a kind and fun dude, and even did his best to get a great picture for us, though I'm far too lame to do it proper justice:

Look at those eyes of his, he's still got it after all these years, and can turn it on when he needs to - I felt for one moment that I was suddenly in the middle of the Greatest Decade and could hear his screaming fans echoing throughout the hotel.

In his Saturday panel I had asked him how he felt about becoming part of the GI Joe universe - a question that (small surprise I guess) no one else had even come close to! He said that, since he is originally not from America, he has only been learning about the GI Joes recently, but that he understands what a great part they played for people who grew up with them, and is honored to be a part of that team. He also mused about what we did with all the kilts from his various action figures over the years! I was delighted to have him sign the just-released issue #33 of the current GI Joe comic, which features his character on the wrap-around cover of the Cobra team. He got a real kick out of it, and said that he needs to work his way around to the front cover! There will be more pictures and stories posted in the next few days from this great show.

Monster Mania Saturday wrapup

Well folks it was a fantastic day at Monster Mania in Cherry Hill! We saw several excellent panel discussions with the high profile guests, with Bruce Campbell really delivering the goods in terms of blow-the-doors-off hilarity and excitement. I think that my favorite panel of the day, hands down, was the 'They Live' reunion, which featured Roddy Piper and Keith David. These two guys hadn't seen each other in 20 years, and their dynamic on the stage was really touching. Roddy at this point in his life has become a self described peaceful guy, who after 7000 professional fights just doesn't want to ever fight anymore, saying 'I don't even argue with my wife!'. Keith David provided great insight into his career, the trouble in making the jump from the stage to the screen, and his fond memories of everyone's favorite John Carpenter sunglasses revealing monsters movie. Piper also regaled us all with some amazing wrestling related stories from the height of his career in the 80s, which were just astonishing to hear. I think that after the panel they even exchanged numbers to keep in touch.

GI Joe 25th - Torpedo

Don't worry Rock 'N Roll, you've got backup! Proficient with explosives and Filipino butterfly knives, Edward W. Leialoha has got you covered. Now if only he could be a little more relaxed off-duty!

The second of three figures in this small wave 6, Lt. Torpedo is looking good, complete with a bunch of diving accessories and harpoon gun. He even comes with flippers - nice work.

Hasbro site restocked

If you're having trouble finding the latest waves of Transformers figures, wave 3 of the GI Joe comic 2-packs, or even most of the Star Wars 30th Anniversary figures, jump on over to hasbrotoyshop.com as it seems they have just restocked much of their inventory, and added many new items to their listings. Amusingly, most of those items have been in stores for quite some time, but at least they're finally catching up, and with things in stock! Extra cool is that there are five Indiana Jones figures, just sitting there waiting to go live.

GI Joe 25th - Rock 'N Roll

Several weeks ago the Preserve was fortunate enough to discover all of the wave 6 figures from the GI Joe 25th anniversary line at a single stop on the daily travels. Hasbro, I'm certain more due to production considerations than monetary benevolence, made this an easy wave on the wallet, featuring only three new figures packed in with an assortment of previous releases to fill out each case. We begin the wave 6 feature with Rock 'N Roll, aka Craig S. McConnel from Malibu Beach. Click the picture for his full bio and close up shots.

Weight lifter, guitar player, and familiar with all NATO and Warsaw Pact light and heavy machine guns, Rock 'N Roll is a man of honor and integrity, but in some ways a study in opposites. Stay tuned for the other two figures from this small but mighty wave.

Press Release - NECA Beetlejuice

Press Release - NECA brings us details about another of the exciting figures that we saw previewed at their Toy Fair booth - Beetlejuice! Transformers Movie Voyager - Offroad Ironhide

Another of the recent releases in the tail end of the Transformers Movie line of toys, today we bring you the Voyager class Offroad Ironhide. Click the pic for his detailed page and bio.

While I have a much easier time of swallowing repaints when they are given a new name, case in point the great new WalMart exclusives, I figure that Ironhide has always been a favorite character so I was content to get a new variation. His bio is a little more 'fun loving' than one usually thinks about with the old soldier, but I'm sure that he'll be back in action for movie #2 in 2009.

eBay Treasures

This evening's eBay browsing has unearthed a truly bafflingly amazing set of treasures all being offered by one mysterious seller. I am so desperately curious to know where these professional operators get their hands on this insane stuff! There's simply too much awesomeness to list it all here, and maddeningly over 1/2 of his current auctions end within 3 hours of the time of this post, but by following the links below you should at least see some of these amazing pieces and what they went for in the final analysis: There's a lot more but I really should stop there at the risk of being dull. I'd advise anyone who is interested in those examples above to check out his completed auctions - it's really quite an assortment of marquee pieces and I couldn't resist sharing them.

Sega Master System Import Title - Speedball

Continuing to fill in the manageable but still sizable Sega Master System title library in detail, check out the import title Speedball! Click the picture for additional photos of the contents.

This is another title released through Virgin, and as such they continue their one-printing-for-all method, with eight languages and a massive multi-lang instruction book being part of the package. You have to love the abridged write-up on the back:

Speedball is the action sport of the 21st century. Dodge neckbreaking tackles and bone-crushing body slams to pass a solid steel ball towards your opponent's goal. Hammer your foe enough times and he'll cry for mercy.

I love the Master System, but something tells me that the graphics may not quite be up to cashing the check that text just wrote. The game actually features a cool top-down perspective very similar to SmashTV (being one of the very favorite arcade games here at the Preserve, as played in actual arcades). Also notice that some friendly person over seas was goodly enough to save the SEGA sticker on the inside of the case, preserved for all these years.

So just remember: Speedball is de sport van de 21ste eeuw.

Target Exclusive Scout - Warpath

Our updates of the most recent wave of Target Exclusive Scouts continue today with an excellent name from the history books - Warpath! Click the photo for a detailed page and bio.

Always one of the coolest mini-sized bots from the G1 line, as well as being an amusingly portrayed and voiced character on the original cartoon, Warpath has no small number of fans, so it's nice that he found inclusion into this new series. Of course, we would have all loved to see him be a little tank, but at least they are on the right track with the color scheme.

Transformers Target Exclusive Scout - Crosshairs

The fertile hunting grounds of Long Island, explored during the Toy Fair trip, provided a significant diversity of product from my small town. In particular, the latest wave of Target Exclusive Scout figures, which I had never seen in person, turned up in non-zero numbers, allowing for the completion of that line! Featured today we have Crosshairs, the Autobot armorer. Click the picture for a detailed page.

I enjoyed his bio, as it gave a great amount of character development in the few short phrases of text that are available. The attention to detail, and near insane level of categorization and incomprehensible filing systems are all things that I have a certain understandable passion for; and it is all applied to high powered weaponry! Crosshairs may be one of my new favorite characters.

Now that we have finally finished our Toy Fair 2008 coverage, we can get back to the business of cataloging the best in old and new toys and games that you have got to know about! We had not quite finished the GI Joe wave 3 comic pack galleries before the Toy Fair stuck, so today we're making up for that. Check out the supremely excellent 2-pack of Tomax and Xamot which is in high demand across the country! Click the picture for details about the set.

This pack comes complete with a brand new comic from Larry Hama - snap one up if you can possibly find it!

Toy Fair 2008 - finale

Toy Fair 2008 coverage finally concludes with this big list of exciting galleries! The day wouldn't be complete unless we feature a few of the best shots from these galleries, so here we go! Giant Microbes will soon be even Giant-er, when their new upsized figures hit around fall of 2008.

The beautiful animals from Hansa won everyone over, even melting the hardened heart of The Uncle.

And lastly, as a final reminder to The Uncle that it's time for him to follow his dream of creating surreal and disturbing puppet shows, we take a last look at Silly Puppet's GW Bush figure, complete with sound chip and high sales figures!

So that wraps it up! We all had a fantastic time at the show, and are proud of the coverage that we were able to deliver. The wheels are already turning to line up plans for the massive San Diego Comic Con in July, but for now let us take a breath, and enjoy the completion of this, the most important toy industry event of the year. Here is to a great 2008!

Toy Fair 2008 - Hasbro General

Toy Fair 2008 coverage has nearly wrapped up, so today take a gander at the following new galleries. A very popular item from the Hasbro showroom was from their FurReal Friends line, but was much cooler than the dogs and ponies - it was an adorable dinosaur!

This thing was definitely cool, and I bet that any kid would love to get this Christmas morning. It was huge and well animated, and it would be a great buddy with whom to watch Saturday morning cartoons! Another awesome piece was in the Iron Man display room - they had a full sized prop replica of the Iron Man prototype that Stark builds in the movie.

Toy Fair 2008 - KNex

Toy Fair 2008 coverage is nearly complete, today featuring the following excellent new galleries: The K'Nex booth was a great time, and we had fun seeing all of their new building toys. Along with their main line of self-titled products, they showed off their Lincoln Log property, which they are bringing back from the brink of the past. Also exciting was their aquisition of the Brio line, and they plan to revitalize that product as well. Having grown up with Brio, this was indeed very happy news!

Their method for bringing these old lines back into the contemporary space is to retain the best parts of the vintage design and construction, while at the same time adding sets to the line which feature updated designs and materials, but in the same spirit as the original. With Lincoln Logs, while they still have wood made building sets, other sets in the line feature plastic roofs on the houses, and even some awesome small figures.

Our guide to their products described it as being so easy and straight forward - it's great to meet someone who is so confident and knowledgeable about their business! Finally, for all the Final Fantasy fans out there, I know I can't be the only one who wants a Rubber Ducky-Chocobo!

This picture came out a little more arty than I'd planned, which was a side effect of their under lit displays, but just look there in the midst of the black and white jewelry for the vibrant yellow prize.

Toy Fair - more galleries!

In an effort to plow through the raft of remaining pictures from Toy Fair 2008, an absurd number of new galleries have been posted today - check them out: Let's check out a few quick highlights. First 4 Figures really has some great stuff coming out, and I particularly love the treatment of the Alien skull in this piece.

And really, who wouldn't want a little plush Jaws figure from Underground Toys, complete with sound?!

I know - it's like the perfect gift for any occasion! And lastly, you gotta love the Pirate Spawn.

Even after all that, there are still a number of galleries to go up, believe it or not! Perhaps later today we can finish up the coverage of Toy Fair 2008, but it will likely stretch into next week a small bit. There are tons of new, and old, individual products to not lose sight of, so we will shift gears back into non-convention coverage soon!

Toy Fair 2008 - Sunny Puppets

With an update to our plush coverage at Toy Fair 2008, here is a new mini gallery for Sunny Puppets! The Uncle has a serious fascination with puppets and puppetry, and we were both fascinated by the products at the Sunny Puppets booth. They had a sizable line of realistic animals, all of which I was surprised to learn were hand puppets!

Then they also have a huge line of 'human' styled puppets, with themes like 'Indians', 'Interesting Jobs' and 'Magical People' which includes a wizard and Santa Claus. If anyone is looking for a great gift to get The Uncle look no further than the fantastic website of sunnypuppets.com for a tremendous list of their massive product line.

Captain Power on Attack of the Show

As expected, the Captain Power spot on Attack of the Show was pretty disappointing. The I'm-much-too-cool-for-you doucheclown hosts didn't even try to take the toy seriously, simply writing it off as a total failure. The saving grace of the spot was that they were very polite and respectful to Tim Dunigan, aka. Captain Power, during the phone interview. It was great to hear him in that short spot, though all of us fans wish it had been longer and better done overall. Too bad that they proved, yet again beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the show is about nothing more than sacrificing things on the alter of today's hipness. Well, after my belligerent and scathing review, I invite people to check it out for themselves and actually form their own opinions! Click here and then click on "Your Childhood Sucked: Captain Power" - enjoy.
