The Case for Mars, by Robert ZubrinAn excellent and inspiring work, dating back to 1996, I found every chapter to be exciting and educational. Zubrin is an engineer through and through and presents basic equations to back up everything he has to say. His arguments are highly compelling since he builds from basic first principles on most of his claims, and illustrates how the goal is achievable with processes or formulas which have been widely used for decades. I got the feeling on more than one occasion that the author of the popular, more recent book The Martian read this one and immediately wanted to write a fictionalized adventure story based very tightly on the discussions presented here. While this book is probably most exciting for someone who already is convinced that expanding to Mars is not only a good idea, but also a moral imperative, I suspect it would be fascinating to readers with other interests as well. With any luck, it will help some of those more casual readers also see the importance of the work and recruit them to the cause! |
