Somewhere a Voice, by Eric Frank Russell
Seven problems for seven worlds. A collection of short stories.
I was bowled over by these stories. What felt initially like a very pulpy adventure,
and one in danger of being full of casual 1960's racism, turned out to be nearly the exact
opposite. Russell strikes me as a writer who perhaps came into some more tolerant
social views at some time near the occasion of writing these stories, and worked to
encapsulate his newfound understanding of the worth of all different people around the
world into the evolving worldview of certain of his characters.
By far a worthwhile read, just about for all stories in this volume, and I'm looking forward
to trying more works by this author. His 'Sinister Barrier' comes highly recommended, though
has spotty reviews (not that I put much weight in those) so that may be a good next step.
