Sandman Slim, by Richard Kadrey
I really liked this book initially. I was even feeling pretty solid about it
being one of my favorite of 2021, even though it's only January! Something
sort of happened as I continued, though. The first sign of trouble was
repeated use of things that were funny of clever the first time but way less
so when you see them again ('Beverly Hillbillies' references, for example).
I think this is Kadrey's first book, so some growing pains are to be expected.
What really turned me off, however, was that at about the 2/3 mark, the text started
to be riddled with typos. I'm not sure what happened to the editing after that point,
but that just kills my enjoyment of a book and pulls me out of the story again and again.
Always makes me want to be an editor but that would be too much pressure in some ways, never
being sure that I found them all!
There are a surprising number of books in this Sandman Slim ongoing series, so I guess
enough people were willing to overlook the rough spots of this first effort. I may
pick up another, because I did find the writing to be fun and gritty but not in a grinding,
unpleasant sort of way. It felt like there was a lot of Dashiel Hammett in there, but
updated for 2009 urban fantasy. I have to still recommend this one as a 'try it out' because
you might end up really having a fun time with it.
