Time is the Simplest Thing, by Clifford D. Simak
What a fantastic story. This was my first Simak book, and it absolutely did not disappoint. On so many levels, it was fulfilling:
his human-centered inventiveness, his non-tech heavy but still very advanced plotting, his focus on the mind and self,
his treatment of religion and how it could fit into a narrative which typically excludes it, his down to earth
understanding of physical hardship and challenges. Everything was thoughtful, considered, and prose was for the most part
spare except when it wasn't and then it was powerful and excellently crafted.
Seeing the humans who possessed Paranormal Kinetics (PK) be referred to by the slang of 'parry' was a particular treat
for me as well, as it came up constantly through the book. Even the last few pages managed to further elevate the story
instead of just wrapping things up and ending on a laughtrack. The best book I've read so far this year.
