Spaceside, by Michael Mammay
A sequel to a popular military sci-fi title, Planetside, which was the author's first, this
book presented an interesting, almost slice-of-life approach to the main character. Having not read
Planetside, I can't say exactly how the two works differ - military sci-fi isn't really my thing - however
the action scenes in this title would probably give some indication as to how it went. In contrast
to the more action-oriented first title, Spaceside deals mostly with what it is like for a soldier to
come home after the fight, how they fit back in to society, and how they are viewed by others. The author is
himself a soldier with multiple tours in Iraq / Afghanistan, so I found it actually very compelling to
learn more about his perspective through his writing and what is protagonist was experiencing. While maybe not
the strongest or most polished writer, that honesty and earnestness more than compensated for it in my opinion
and I found the book to be worthwhile as a result.
