Space Cadet, by Robert A. Heinlein
The second installment in Heinlein's 'juveniles' series, written in the 1950s for younger
readers. One can't help but marvel that the kids of the '50s were probably pretty mature
compared to society today! This entry in the series follows a somewhat standard
military bootcamp template, however in space with all of the interesting possibilities that
allows. The several guys we follow have, I found, well developed characters and interesting
banter which kept it fun, and it was delightful to see the further definition of the expanding
sphere of mankind's exploration of the solar system. As these books progress, they chart a possible
course of humanity expanding out to the stars, and the associated problems that are sure to
go along with that.
Another enjoyable read, and I think it's worth going through all 12 volumes, though spaced apart a little.
I am making sure to pick up the 1977-1978 Del Rey editions, which I think will all look beautiful together
once completed!
