The River of Consciousness, by Oliver Sacks
Published shortly after the author's death, this small text is the tail end
of a wonderful life of science, discovery and elevated thought crossing disciplines
and pursuits as varied as they were fascinating. His primary focus was the brain, and
more specifically pathologies that may befall people through which we can gain ever
greater insight into how things may be working up there. This book consisted of a
series of essays, some from talks he had given, some probably sketched in while he still
had time, and all well worth the time.
Start with this volume, then pursue his other
work as I am sure to do, and enjoy learning about a great scientist who was skilled
enough to share his thoughts with the rest of us in that easy going way that so few
ever manage to do.
Also, be sure to check out that bibliography! Guys like this always have a spectacular
list of books to point us towards, and Sacks is no exception here!
