Profiles in Courage, by John F. Kennedy
Try as I might, this book seems to cement for me that I really have to struggle
to be interested in politics. Kennedy clearly is passionate about the subject, and
about the mentality of people who have engaged in this field over the past 200 years
in this country, and highlights a few of what he feels are the important instances
where an elected official stuck to their beliefs instead of what would make them popular.
He argues that many of these instances took place at a pivotal moment in American
history, and it was the sacrifice of the politician, trading their future career for
the current right-thing-to-do which makes them both couragous and the story worth telling.
While I can appreciate the events described, and Kennedy's decent efforts to make them
engaging and well-written, it remains true that I just really struggle to care! Ah well,
maybe in another 10 years or so.
