Our Final Invention, by James Barrat
The oncoming AI reality, which is likely to match and then exceed human
intelligence in short order, is a fascinating topics that is astonishingly
not being frantically discussed and planned for more broadly. I subscribe
completely to the immediate threat that this poses to all mankind, and am
interested to now learn as much as possible about this topic and what is
being done to prepare. Interestingly, this book is over 5 years old, and
we haven't yet been overtaken by AI, though he does mention the year 2020
a lot, which it happens to just be as I write this.
My problem with this book, and it's a big one, is that his ideas were
really able to be expressed in 30 pages, at most. The rest of the 230 pages
are literally filled with variations or blatant repeats of what was said
already, which got mighty old by the end.
So, it's a topic I find to be of vital importance, and it's information I
want to share with people, but I'm not sure I could recommend this frustating
book to anyone. Perhaps, just read the first 4 chapters and then take it back
to your local library, and that will give you all you need to be just as
concerned about AI as I am.
