The Long Run, by Daniel Keys MoranPicked up on a solid recommendation from a quite bookish friend, this little known
computer-scifi-thriller was a wild ride! Trent rapidly established himself as a
character that will be long remembered for his detailed realization, thoughtful worldview
and overall inventiveness. He isn’t Trent the Uncatchable for nothing!
Through Trent's exploits we get to go on a sweeping tour of Earthbound destinations, space scraper buildings,
spaceports, space stations, lunar bases and assorted craft. A very solid and "classic" feeling work,
rooted in the delight of the fantastic just like the golden age!
One of the most striking aspects of this novel is the degree of prescience it exhibited in predicting
the Internet, from 1989. The author clearly was in the industry, working as a professional programmer
I believe, and was able to see enough of where things were headed to really describe the internet but with
the name "The Crystal Wind". Ranks this book among the number which really saw the future of society clearly, and
puts Moran among the big name authors who he himself admires.
This author initially planned 33 books in his Continuing Time series, a bold plan by any measure! He only
managed to produce a handful though they are all, I’m told, quite good and worth the time. Now he is writing
again, after a long hiatus, via a blog with a small monthly subscription - may be well worth checking it out.
