Titan - by John VarleyIt was a well paced, inventive, visually rich story and I do think that I'll spend the time to read part two (wizard) and three (demon) so I can see what ends up happening to the Titan. It's always a fun game to play - "how much sex will this sci fi story contain"? I guess the answer here was "on the high side of some" with probably the visuals and scandalous aspect, for 1979, being the most interesting aspect. Varley puts a lot of effort into the 'hard sci fi' aspects of his space station, and has a fun organic angle which carries through the work. The protagonist, Cirroco, was also well done, allowing for the reader to sympathize with her plights and delight in her strength. Oddly enough, I chose "Millenium" as my sci fi movie of the month at 16club9, and came to learn that Varley wrote the book upon which this film is based! Funny how these things work out. |
