Highlander: Scimitar - by Ashley McConnell
Another entry in the Highlander book series, this one dipped more into the old ultra
violence for some of the action scenes, much to my surprise while reading the first
20 pages over lunch at Vietnam. I will give credit to the author that they took pains
to leverage the immortality angle perhaps a little more effectively than the first title
I read in this series (Shadow of Obsession) and the indestructibility of the swordsmen was
used to great effect a number of times. Now, things got a little fast and loose while explaining
how their bodies would recover from an episode of dying by thirst in the desert - namely waking
up fully healed and I guess full of another 3 days of water that would then start to expire - but
employ that willing suspension of disbelief!
Certainly the staging and pacing of the book was good, and accomplished a lot in
the short number of pages. The city of Petra - a real place about which I need to
read further - was a fun diversion in the last 15 or so pages, as the book came to what
felt like a bit of a rushed but complete conclusion. Overall, a decent read, and a fun,
exotic tale of high adventure!
