Redshirts - by John Scalzi
Having been on a roller coaster ride with Scalzi - where I adored Old Man's War, and was quite let
down by Ghost Brigades, I wasn't sure what to expect from this new, well reviewed work. Sure, like just about
everyone else who is being honest with you, I'm a Star Trek fan, and expected some sort of a send-up of
the genre; a tongue-in-cheek look at the ridiculousness that is televised Sci-Fi.
Well - you do get that in this book, and it is smartly done. But, what really surprised me is that
you get a whole lot more. At the risk of spoiling any of the fun of discovery, or the more potent
reveals that crop up over the story I will refrain from much in the way of details. Suffice to say, come for
the Star Trek, stay for the insight into the human condition.
