A Princess of Mars - by Edgar Rice Burroughs
Amusingly enough, I believe I first heard the name "John Carter" in an anime series of which I
appear to be just about the only fan. Namely, that would be Zone of the Enders, based off of
the Playstation game of the same name. In that, the crazy military police guy is chasing the
hero across the solar system, fanatically calling him by the name of the famous Edgar Rice Burroughs
character. Of course, Mars figures heavily into this show.
I made sure to look up the reference, and was pleased to see that it came from a series of books that
I had of course meant to read for ages! It really is a shame that I wasn't exposed to these things
when I was a kid, though I still managed to develop a love and appreciation of space regardless. I
say without hesitation that I really enjoyed this read, and as always enjoyed the turns of phrase
and style that come with, what is now, an older book from an earlier time. The action is taught,
the characters powerful and heroic, and the affection well described. While wearing too much of a
'science hat' while reading will certainly spoil things, along with what all we have learned in the
decades since it was published, it is always best to leave that hat at home and enjoy the ride!
