Old Man's War - by John Scalzi
I've started to participate in the
Sword and Laser
book club, and this is their selection to kick off 2013. I was not familiar with Scalzi before now, and it
turns out that I had been missing out on an author I would really enjoy! It is rightly said that he borrows
heavily from Heinlein, but he freely acknowledges that. Plus, when so very many sci-fi writers do the same,
that fact can sort of be ignored and you can focus on the writing itself. In this case, that writing is
fantastic. Not heavy, weighty or meriting a lot of chewing and digesting, this is a fun military space
opera of a book, which reaffirmed in my mind that I'm not necessarily a slow reader, I just need to read
things that I enjoy! I managed to polish this off in just a few days, probably under 6 hours of reading time,
and that is a rewarding statistic to me.
I know I'll be tracking down more Scalzi, and have Sword and Laser to thank for the introduction. I guess this is
really an example of a book club working as well as can be! If you like this sort of thing, check out Scalzi,
and I suspect you'll not be disappointed.
